TikTok’s STEM Feed: Safe & Educational Content For Teens

By Digital Journal Blog

Over one billion people use TikTok, one of the most widely used social media sites in the world, to express themselves, connect with others, and learn new things.

Did you realize, though, that TikTok is also a fantastic resource for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education?

Introducing TikTok’s STEM Feed: Youthful and Ethical Content

The STEM feed, a unique watching experience that offers users a dedicated location to browse a wide choice of motivating, amusing, and educational videos linked to STEM, was introduced by TikTok in March 2023.

The STEM feed is part of TikTok’s new Topic Feed initiative, which allows users to browse content from different categories such as gaming, food, fashion, and sports. It aims to empower users to discover new topics, learn new skills, and find their passions in STEM fields.

Whether it’s watching a chemistry experiment, learning how to code, or getting tips on environmental sustainability, the STEM feed offers something for everyone who is curious about the world around them.

But how can users trust that the content they see on the STEM feed is accurate and appropriate? To ensure that the STEM feed provides high-quality and reliable content, TikTok has partnered with Common Sense Networks and Poynter – two organizations that specialize in content evaluation and fact-checking.

These partners will assess all content on the STEM feed to make sure it meets TikTok’s Community Guidelines and standards for safety, education, and entertainment.

STEM Hashtags vs. TikTok’s STEM Feed

The STEM feed is not the first time that TikTok has showcased its educational potential. In fact, STEM-related hashtags have received over 110 billion views to date, connecting a dynamic community of creators and learners over shared interests.

Some of the most popular hashtags include #LearnOnTikTok, #ScienceExperiments, #MathIsFun, and #Coding101.

So what’s the difference between using hashtags and using the STEM feed? Hashtags are a great way to find and join specific conversations on TikTok.

Users can search for hashtags or follow them to see relevant content on their For You feed. However, hashtags can also be crowded with unrelated or low-quality content that can distract or misinform users.

The STEM feed offers a more curated and personalized experience for users who want to dive deeper into STEM topics. Users can access the STEM feed by tapping on the tab next to the For You and Following tabs on their home page.

The STEM feed will show them videos that match their interests and preferences based on their previous interactions on TikTok. Users can also like, comment, share, and save videos on the STEM feed as they would on any other feed.

Why Launch A STEM Feed On TikTok?

The goal of TikTok is to encourage creativity and spread joy among its members. By launching the STEM feed, TikTok hopes to achieve this mission by providing users with a platform where they can learn something new, express their ideas, and connect with others who share their passions.

The STEM feed also reflects TikTok’s commitment to supporting education and social good initiatives. In 2020, TikTok pledged $50 million to its Creative Learning Fund, which supports educational creators and organizations on the platform.

In order to promote awareness and collect donations for topics including climate change, mental health, diversity, and inclusion, TikTok has also worked with a number of NGOs and individuals.

The STEM feed is not only beneficial for users but also for creators who want to showcase their expertise and creativity in STEM fields. By creating engaging and informative content for the STEM feed, creators can reach a wider audience, build their personal brand, and monetize their videos through features such as TikTok Creator Marketplace and Promote.

The STEM feed is still in its early stages of development and will be rolling out to all US users soon. If you’re interested in exploring or creating STEM content on TikTok, be sure to check out the STEM feed when it becomes available and tag #STEMFeed in your videos!
